An internal stair connects floors through more than its visible treads. Landings, supports, surrounding walls and the floor opening may all enter the design decision. Establish the intended future circulation before defining which existing assembly leaves.
Compare three extents
| Intended change | Removal boundary to resolve |
|---|---|
| Renew finishes | Named coverings and finishes, with structure retained |
| Replace a flight | Actual flight, connections and retained landings |
| Retire the whole connection | Reviewed stairs, landings and the future floor-opening condition |
The responsible engineer and designer determine structure, temporary conditions and the replacement or infill design. Steelpoint assesses its structural-removal contribution; it does not design or install the new staircase through that enquiry.
Identify the landings and adjoining construction
Available records and assessment should establish how the stair connects at each level. A landing that appears to belong to the stair may also affect retained construction. Do not use a finish-removal description as authority for structural removal.
Connected services, balustrades and adjacent room boundaries need explicit decisions. The appropriate trades establish preparation for systems affected by the proposed work.
Resolve access while the connection changes
The project team determines how people and contractors move through the building during each reviewed stage. A second visible stair does not automatically establish suitable alternative access or occupation arrangements. Fire-route and building-use decisions belong to the responsible professionals.
In an illustrative replacement, a designed new flight uses retained landings. A different design retires the connection and includes a separately designed floor infill. The removal endpoints differ even if the old flights look similar.
Assign the receiving condition
Name who handles temporary protection, any support, floor infill, repairs and the replacement assembly. Demolition completion does not mean the inter-floor route is ready for use.
For stairs attached to a warehouse platform, the mezzanine service addresses the platform relationship. This guide concerns the wider permanent commercial inter-floor connection.
Request an assessment with the property location, stair/landing information, intended circulation and design contact. Identify whether finishes, a flight or the whole connection is under review, and what must remain at each level.
