Structural assessment
Unknown concrete floor systems: what to ask before removal
- Structural assessment
Published

A concrete surface does not reveal whether it is a slab on ground, a suspended floor or a specialised structural system. If the construction is unknown, establish that fact before describing the work as routine slab removal.
Find the drawing that identifies the floor
Provide structural plans and any known alteration records. Identify the precise level and area involved; a building may contain more than one floor system. Where records mention prestressing or post-tensioning, bring that information directly to the structural professional rather than interpreting it yourself.
Define the limit of the assessment
Explain whether the proposal is complete removal, a local opening or work beside a retained section. Ask the engineer what needs to be established before scope and method can be agreed. This guide supplies no cutting or breaking instructions.
- Name the building level and drawing reference.
- Mark the proposed removal boundary.
- Identify occupied or retained space beneath the area.
What to resolve before scheduling
Choose not sure in the estimate form if the floor type is unresolved. Steelpoint needs the assessment outcome before confirming suitable concrete-removal work. A small opening is not automatically a minor structural task.
