Structural assessment
Basement wall removal where surrounding ground must remain
- Structural assessment
Published

A basement wall may separate the building interior from ground that must remain supported. If a foundation is being removed beside retained property or construction, make that relationship a central assessment question.
Show levels and neighbouring features
Provide the available survey and sections, identifying adjacent foundations, paved areas and property boundaries. If relative levels are unknown, label them unknown rather than estimating from a street photograph. The relevant area can extend beyond the wall being demolished.
Agree the engineering interface
Ask the project engineer to define the retained-ground and neighbouring-structure requirements. Separate any designed temporary works from the permanent outcome expected by the next contractor. A demolition quote should not silently become a ground-support design.
- Identify the ground or structure that must remain undisturbed.
- Provide available level and foundation records.
- Name the designer responsible for the proposed retained condition.
The decision to carry into your enquiry
Describe the wall and its surroundings when requesting structural demolition. Keep any excavation or support work subject to project-specific agreement. The boundary of the removal can only be settled once the required condition of the surrounding site is understood.
