Masonry wall removal: resolve the wall's role before defining scope

A brick or block wall may be described casually as a partition, exterior skin or structural wall. That description should be confirmed before it becomes the basis of a removal request, particularly where adjoining construction stays.

Ask what the wall supports or restrains

Gather the relevant architectural and structural drawings and identify the wall on both. Note visible connections to the roof, floors and neighbouring walls without attempting to interpret their capacity. A thin appearance or hollow sound is not a reliable classification.

Define both sides of the finished boundary

The demolition enquiry needs to describe what remains after removal: adjoining finishes, weather enclosure and any permanent support designed by others. If the wall's role is unresolved, keep structural review as an open item rather than quoting it as a routine partition.

  • Mark the wall's full extent, including concealed sections.
  • Identify construction above and beside it.
  • Name who will confirm its structural role.

The decision to carry into your enquiry

Use selective demolition as the starting point and explain that the masonry classification is pending. A site assessment can clarify visible scope, but an owner sketch does not replace engineering where the proposed change affects structural stability.
